Initial Learning Environment Plans

Members of the design team:
Bethany Ballard

Metaphor/Theme being used in the Learning Environment:
Oceans and Seas

Targeted grade level for the Learning Environment:
5th grade

Initial idea of the overall goal for creating the Learning Environment:

To teach the children the many functions of the oceans, such as storing heat and energy from the sun and distributing this heat to land through the ocean currents. The heat stored in the ocean waters heats the land and air during winter and cools it during the summer. I also want to children to be able to locate on a map the four recognized oceans: the Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, and Arctic. I also want the children to learn that a sea is a smaller branch of an ocean, which is often partially enclosed by land. The largest seas are the South China Sea, the Caribbean Sea, and the Mediterranean Sea. They will be able to locate these on a world map.

Sample QCCs to be addressed in Learning Environment:

Topic: Basic Skills
Standard: Operates basic technology tools and applications.
Topic: Productivity
Standard: Uses multimedia tools to express ideas.
Topic: Problem Solving/Decision Making
Standard: Identifies and uses technology tools to solve problems with teacher assistance.

Initial ideas for activities:

An Oceans and Seas of the World “label me” printout. Children will locate on the computer, the Atlantic, Arctic, Indian, and Pacific oceans, as well as the three largest seas. After they have successfully identified the oceans, they will print out their work to save and keep in their notebook. A Water Cycle “label me” printout. Children will label the diagram of how water cycles the earth. This will also be done on computer and printed out to keep in their notebook. A Water Cycle “find it” quiz. This is a quiz on the earth’s water cycle. This computer programmed quiz will let them know if they have a wrong answer, and will allow them to retry until they achieve the right answer and score 100% on the quiz. This way, they will know the right answer to each question and can keep a copy of the quiz in their notebook to have as a study guide. Also, a Water Cycle Adventure game. This is an interactive computer game that shows the children each step of the water cycle while explaining it at the same time.
