Project Name:
Ocean Pollution

Description of Learning Goals and Standards
1. To determine actions that can be taken to ensure healthy oceans.
2. To make a stronger connection between what students do and how it can affect the ocean.
3. To allow students to research the internet to research and help brainstorm ideas.

QCC's:
Topic: Problem Solving/Decision Making
Standard: Uses technology to solve problems and make decisions with teacher guidance.

Topic: Research
Standard: Uses basic research techniques with teacher guidance.

Topic: Science Inquiry, Process Skills and Problem Solving
Standard: Asks questions, makes and keeps records of observations, classifies objects and events, communicates with others, makes inferences and predictions, uses estimation and measurement, uses evidence to construct explanations, makes sketches and diagrams to explain ideas, organizes data into tables and charts for interpretation, reads and interprets various types of graphs, formulates simple hypotheses, identifies and controls a limited number of variables, and designs a simple experiment.

Rationale For Technology
This lesson uses Inspiration software which allows the teachers and students to create a cognitive map to carry out the lesson. The students are also allowed to research on the internet prior to creating the map so they will have ideas and answers they can give the teacher. The great thing about the inspiration software is that is is very colorful and has pictures which are a great way to keep young students' attention and interest.

Description of Lesson Implementation
The students will be given a half hour to research on the internet about ocean pollution. They will be asked to research the answers to the following questions:
1. What is ocean pollution?
2. What are different types of ocean pollution?
3. How does pollution get into the water?
4. What does biodegradeable mean?
5. What are some non-biodegradeable objects?
6. What can you do to help the ocean?
After the students have found ideas to answer the questions, the class will come together as a whole and the teacher will ask the students to brainstorm as a class and answer the questions. She may call on an individual, she may call on a group, or she make take volunteers to answer each question. After the cognitive map is completed, the teacher will print out a copy for each student to have.

Assessment
Students will be given a written exam that is multiple choice. This exam will consist of multiple choice questions and they will be given a whole class period to complete it. They will also be asked to write a short essay on how they can help save the ocean. This essay will be due one week after the exam. The written exam is a great way to test the student's knowledge while the short essay gives them a chance to express what they've learned as well as how they feel about saving the ocean.

Other Places to use this solution
This can be done at home since inspirations software can be downloaded and used at home as well.
